On the 17th of March, a group of Students, accompanied by some Committee members from the Hunter Region Branch to the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Resources (NIER), an Industry-backed, research institute that works through the perplexing issues plaguing society.

NIER is an industry-focused research institute with expertise on specialised infrastructure, focusing on improving environmental, social, and economic outcomes in the energy, resources, food and water sectors.
Some notable achievements for NIER include their involvement in the historic campaign: Charge Around Australia, using an array of 18 retractable solar-panels, each printed out and paper thin, to ensure the fully electric vehicle can circumnavigate 15000 kilometres around Australia.
Over the course of the day, the students had the ability to learn directly from the experts about the projects they were conducting, the way they were approaching them and the solutions that they had found. The facility houses hundreds of PhD Students and Engineering Experts in making it a fantastic experience for all.

It's always fantastic to see NIER employ and work with PhD students, allowing students to work alongside industry professionals, learning from their craft and gaining real world experience to put their studies into practice and make a difference.
The AusIMM Hunter Student Chapter want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the team at NIER for their hospitality, and look forward to continuing this relationship and working together closely in the future!
